THE First-Time Buyer Moving Day Checklist

Everything a first-time home buyer needs to survive the first few days in a new home.

Hello Homeowner!

So you've finally scraped, climbed, and scrambled your way onto the property ladder. Well done you!

My name is Emily, and I’m the founder of NUA x DESIGN, and I’d personally like to say, Congratulations!

Now the adventure of furnishing, cleaning, and nesting begins. Whether you've just been approved for a mortgage, put in your first offer, or have already exchanged and have keys in hand - it's most likely been a tenuous process to get this far. Unfortunately you’re nowhere near done yet. The devil is in the details and you still have quite a bit to sort out before that new flat or house truly feels like home. It isn’t an easy feat to purchase property and we want to help ensure the rest of the home making process is a bit more enjoyable.

We’re based in London and we know that a lot of city dwellers spend many years renting furnished homes, so the chances that you have everything you need to furnish your new place is slim to none. In fact, we imagine that you still need to create a budget for key pieces like a sofa and bed before even thinking about the paint or bits and bobs to decorate with.

In our inaugural blog post, we are excited to present the ultimate first-time-buyer-home-furnishing checklists. We’ll start with an ‘essentials’ moving day list and then help you create a monster strategy to one day achieve a dream version of your new dwelling. Our aim is to help you consider everything you now need to turn that house into a home (even if you can't afford it all yet). That's right, we know you're strapped for cash, but we want to help advise you and guide you through the process of personalising and perfecting your home - now matter your budget, style, or timeline.

Owning a home can be like nurturing a child or watching a plant grow. It will evolve with you, your lifestyle, and your family over the years. So from the start, accept that it will never be done, there will always be something to fix or improve, and nothing is final (because let’s face it, there’s always a new trend telling us to update).

With that said, it is key that your home not only matches your personality by considering your style, but it must also coordinate with your routine, habits, and lifestyle to help enhance and streamline your day-to-day life.

Simply asking yourself, ‘How do I want this room to look?” is not enough. You must also ask yourself, ‘How do I use this space?’. This may seem obvious, but if you don’t strategically plan your interior, you may very well quickly find yourself in a shop purchasing a piece you have impulsively fallen in love with, or a salesperson may talk you into home furnishings that truly don’t match your lifestyle. And we know how expensive it can be to decorate, style, or renovate, so strategising is one of the keys to successfully designing within budget.

At NUA x DESIGN, we believe that personalising your home and making it an oasis can improve your mental health, well being, and that the home can become an extremity to help you work through your daily routine. We'll get into this a bit more in future posts, but today, let's focus on understanding what you will initially need to furnish your home and how to plan for the dream version of it over time.

With our essential checklist you should be able to move in with everything you need to properly function in your new home until you’ve had a chance to unpack all of your existing belongings and discover how they work within your new dwelling. We advise having these items easily accessible and the first items which you bring to your new home. So here it is...

Moving Day Checklist

The Essentials
  • Bed (or at least the correct size mattress)

  • Something to sit on (sofa, lounge chairs, bench)

  • Something to eat off of (dining table or bar)

  • Bed linens

  • Pillows

  • Bath Towels

  • Hand Towels

  • Kitchen Towels

  • Rags/sponge

  • Kitchen roll

  • Toilet roll

  • Hand Soap

  • Dish soap

  • General Cleaning solution

  • Personal toiletries

  • Rubbish Bin

  • Bin Liners

  • Broom

  • Dust pan

  • Dining plates

  • Cutlery

  • Frying pan

  • Sauce pan

  • Cutting knives

  • Cutting board

  • Cups/glasses

  • Mugs

  • Kettle

  • Scissors

  • Champagne or a slice of something sweet to celebrate (YES, you deserve it!)

Now we know you may be a bit surprised by the brevity of our ‘essentials’ list, as well as the fact that it consists mainly of small kitchen items and cleaning products. If you’ve moved house much in your life, you’ll know that these items are key to survival for the first day, if not week in a new dwelling. At NUA x DESIGN, we believe that if you are going to spend the time and money investing in any furniture pieces before you move in (that you didn’t previously own), that they should consist of the bed and/or mattress, dining table, lounge seating - and not much else. Now, if you knew me personally you might be shocked to hear this, as I’m a chronic planner, love furnishing a room to the Nth degree, and have been dubbed as a ‘Monica’ a few times in my life. (Here’s to hoping you caught that reference my FRIENDS.) Trust us, less can be more, and will definitely be more helpful in allowing you to select and purchase the right furniture pieces the first time ‘round.

Stay tuned for our next post where we'll dive into our 'ultimate' first-time buyer home furnishing checklist where we'll help you embark on a long-term strategy to perfect your home.
