Creating a ‘smart home’ does not mean you have to go out and purchase all the latest gadgets, accessories, and robots (although it is totally up to you if you want to). All it really means to create a smart home is to replace what you already own with an automated version or accessory to make your daily life easier.
Developing a smart home also does not mean you have to spend a fortune. Below we have shared our very own beginner’s guide to creating a smarter home:
1. Lighten up!
For many of us who are interested in creating a smart home, smart lighting is a must have. Start off small by getting your hands on a few LED smart bulbs (these will save you having to re-wire your entire home). Smart bulbs can be controlled by an app on your tablet/smartphone which you can then also use to create lighting scenes and schedule when you’d like them to be lit or switched off. A top choice would be PHILIPS Hue; with their starter kits you have the option of a dimmer switch function, white and coloured lights, plus warm to cool light settings – ideal if you are brightening up the party or trying to improve your sleep.
2. Save money and stay warm
Did you know thermostats were one of the very first devices to go smart? Much like smart lighting, a smart thermostat like Hive can be controlled from your smartphone, tablet or laptop and gives you the ability to control and change the temperature of your combi/conventional boiler, electric underfloor heating and even your hot water. By having a smart thermostat, you can adjust your heating to an eco-friendly setting, meaning you can save money on your next energy bill whilst helping the environment all from the comfort of your own home.
3. Gain some assistance
Assisted technology is everywhere, from Amazon’s Alexa and Echo, Google’s Nest models, to Apple’s Siri and Home Kit, there are so many devices to choose from. Having a voice-controlled assistant can be so handy for you during everyday life, simply say a command and they’ll perform the task for you. These modern smart devices are programmed to help you with tasks such as creating a shopping list, checking the traffic before you commute and can even tell you a few knock-knock jokes – it is like having a personal assistant and a friendly companion all wrapped into one.
4. Turn up the volume!
If you are a music lover, then a smart speaker is an essential for you. Designed to pump out rich and vibrant sounds, smart speakers can easily connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to your preferred streaming service or tune into your favourite radio station. A beginner friendly option would be the Sonos speaker system; this integrated system allows for hands-free voice activated control as well as the ability to group connect with multiple rooms in your home. Additionally, devices much like Amazon’s Alexa, Echo and Google’s Nest models can also be used as a speaker within your home.
5. Be smart, safe, and secure
As fun and entertaining smart devices can be for you and your family, they can also help to keep a watchful eye on your home. Installing a smart home camera is an affordable approach to a burglar proof CCTV system and can include features such as 24-hour monitoring, motion sensors, plus mobile alerts. Some smart security systems such as Ring have a camera combined with the doorbell function, meaning you will be able to see who is on your front porch and communicate with them without having to advance towards the door or even be at home at all.
